| Quote (Solaris) It's seem there is 60% chance to take a similar shot I was not aware of this, excellent news! Thanks for the link Solaris.
Quote (Talisman) Will we be able to know if it was successful at that time? I will be staying up. I believe that the listed time takes light delay into account, so that should be the time that we should receive confirmation of touchdown.
Quote (DaninAus) This is a cool event, I wonder if there is any sort of live stream or info on this of any sort. NASA TV will be carrying live coverage, go to www.nasa.gov and find it there
Quote (HarbingerDawn) nly Mars Global Surveyor will be in the right place I made a huge mistake here... Mars Global Surveyor went offline years ago I was thinking that it was Mars Odyssey that was no longer functioning.
So the currently-functional Mars orbiters are: Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (NASA), Mars Express (ESA), and Mars Odyssey (NASA).

| I'm surprised at the amount of people who are watching this and excited about this. Just makes me wonder what would happen if they sent people to Mars.

I think that would be an event that the whole world would stop and watch. It would get every TV channel on Earth covering it as it would be a more historical event then sending a rover there (which happens quite often to all the planets) and even bigger than the moon landing.

| Quote (DaninAus) (which happens quite often to all the planets) Not true at all! Rovers have only been landed on the Moon and Mars. Stationary landers have been sent to the above two worlds, plus Venus and Titan. But aside from those four worlds, humanity has never placed functioning technology on any other significant planetary body. The few other views we've gotten from the other planets have come from orbiters or flyby missions. Neither Uranus nor Neptune has seen even one dedicated mission launched to it. Only one probe has ever orbited Jupiter. The same goes for Saturn and Mercury. The rate at which we launch space probes is less than the rate at which we will launch people once settlement of other worlds begins.

| I just got up to watch the landing. I also just saw Venus from my window, pretty tough to find against the bright sunrise sky. Solaris, that's a great pic!
