| Quote midtskogen ( ) Can't you simply focus manually to infinity? I can on my Nikon lenses but not on Canon lenses. I have a Canon EOS 1000d. Quote HarbingerDawn ( ) Yeah, Vega is not bright enough to serve as a useful focus target for wide-angle images. I should try again when Jupiter is higher in the sky, I don't want the Moon to be up because it usually outshines the Milky Way

| One sort of last-ditch effort you could try is to do a quick test shot, review and adjust focus slightly and repeat until the stars are crisp. Takes more effort but at least it will still work if there aren't any other options.

| Quote Fireinthehole ( ) I have a Canon EOS 1000d I have that also and I've never had problems with manually focusing on bright stars in live view. You have to zoom in a bit in the live view.

Yeah I guess I could try that, but as you say it takes much effort :/ Quote astroniki ( ) I have that also and I've never had problems with manually focusing on bright stars in live view. You have to zoom in a bit in the live view. I zoomed in as far as I could and tried focusing, maybe Vega is a little too dim :/

| Strange. Do you use the kit lens? there ought to be at least some stars visible. Anyway here's comet Lovejoy from last night. 99x30s ISO-1600 F/4,5 150mm Canon 1000D + Sigma 70-300dg on a barn door tracker

| Nice fireball outside my window a couple of hours ago:
http://norskmeteornettverk.no/bilder/2013/ildkule-20131204.mp4
Peak brightness somewhere between -11 and -12. Unfortunately, it disappears behind a cloud, but note the reflection from the ice on the lake below it.Added (12.12.2013, 00:35) --------------------------------------------- People sometimes send me cool stuff. I liked the image which I was allowed to post here:
http://norskmeteornettverk.no/wordpress/?p=1120
It was taken near Orkanger in Norway on 3rd December.

| Damn, didn't know this thread existed. I could sure use some tips for taking photos through my 10 inch.
I got a couple not so good ones with an iPhone. I tried getting Jupiter with my 600D but no luck. I've got all my gear ready for tonight, just waiting on the tips haha.
Edit: So I just got back and after around 2 hours of trying to get some real close ups through the eyepiece with my 600D I could only manage these two decent ones on the no-flash setting, all other modes had the flash stuck on for some reason:
Then I found out I could just video it. Here is the 27 second result, since my camera was full, I'll get a longer and even closer one next time. Watch it in HD or it wont look very good:
PC: Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX670 2GB, Win 7 64-bit
There'll be another time...

| Try Registax.
It's free, and I have absolutely no idea how it works, or how to use it properly, but I once managed to turn this:

| Quote SpaceEngineer ( ) And better sky is needed, center of the Saint-Petersburg city is very bad place for observatory Very true, though it makes little difference to planetary astronomy since planets are so bright.
I did a little bit of editing in GIMP to make the detail in Jupiter more visible However there was more detail visible in the single-frame image: Great views, thank you for sharing!
