JackDole, is the surface of the disc procedural? Would you be able to land on it and see mountains?

Would you be able to land on it and see mountains?

Unfortunately that is not possible.

On the one hand, the inner and outer edges are in reality spheres, and freedom of movement has limits within spheres. The spheres are just invisible.

And although it is possible to generate the surface of a disk procedurally, the result is not very good, with such a large disk, apart from that I then have no hole in the middle.

Up close it looks like this.

I am 0.84 au from the center!

Even with a small disk of Earth's size, almost every mountain would lie flat, because gravity is directed towards the center of the disc.

But what a world to explore would that be, if it would be possible to produce this thing procedurally. biggrin

What lies inside Ice Giants (something I accidentally discovered and it happens when you use exported textures)

Bonus!

I've also thought of that.

Sometime I want build something like a O'Neill cylinder.
Then it would be good if the inside of such a cylinder could be procedurally generated.

And, of course, a disk with a hole in the middle, would also be good! biggrin

Perhaps it is possible to make a fake O'Neill cylinder. Couldn't you make one the same way you created rings and Dyson swarms?

I do not know yet how I could make it best.

Currently is that what I have, more like a cigar, or like a Zeppelin, then like a cylinder.

And it looks not at all good.

Maybe I could make a cylinder, from a number of ring segments. But the more segments, the slower my computer!

That's what I was thinking. 3 chunks of a ring and a back flat piece.
